As you may know, the youth group I help with currently doesn’t have a Pastor. So to make sure camp went as usual, I took on the responsibilities of making sure everyone got registered, money’s paid, and all 60 of our students get there alive. This kind of administrative work does not come naturally to me. Processing payments. Paper work. These kind of things drain me.

When some people picture their dream career, they often imagine never having to do anything they don’t want to do. Every single day is filled with constant joy and fulfillment. There’s never a bad day, because that’s impossible doing what you love.

I still have a lot to learn, but I don’t think this kind of mindset is realistic. No matter what kind of job you work, what kind of lifestyle you live, how much money you have, there’s going to be days where you don’t like what you’re doing. Even if it’s your dream career, you’re going to have days which end with you thinking “Wow. Today sucked. Why do I do this?” Those are just seasons however, they come and go.

This season of camp coordinating comes to a close today. This morning, Uncommon Student Ministries and I are headed to Lake Williamson for Breakaway Teen Camp. Once our boots are on the ground, the students can focus on having a good time at camp and I can zero in on documenting it all for the daily videos. The point is, if I hadn’t sucked it up and did all the administrative work, this week wouldn’t be happening.

To do the things we want to do, we have to take care of all the things we don’t want to do.

Doing things you don’t like doing occasionally is apart of life unfortunately. But once they’re done, we are in a position to do what we love.

So what is that thing for you?

Do yourself a favor. Save that money so you can go on a trip. Clean so your house is more welcoming to friends. Take care of that paperwork so you don’t find yourself in a bind. Even if it’s keeping you from your dream work, get those tasks done now and right so you don’t have to do it later. Your future self will thank you.

Now, if you’ll excuse me. My friends and I are headed off for the greatest week of our lives. See the daily videos first at zacharythayer.net/camp. And keep up with the behind-the-scenes fun on my ig story. 🙂
